Our English language learning program connects high school girls in the U.S. and Canada with girls in India for weekly English conversation and reading practice. This empowers girls in India to learn a language that will open doors for their futures, while giving North American girls a chance to learn about other cultures, build cross-cultural connections, and experience the fulfillment of helping others succeed.
Why Read & Rise Works

Students often don't get enough practice speaking new languages out loud. Regular practice with a native speaker, especially a peer, can make all the difference in becoming fluent.

When girls are more confident in their skills — whether a new language or anything else — it unlocks the potential for participation, leadership, and future pathways to growth and opportunity.
Motivation through connection
Learning a language in a vacuum is nearly impossible. And classrooms can only do so much. A consistent peer relationship helps students stay motivated and feel supported as they learn.

Meet weekly for just 30 minutes
We keep it simple so you can focus on building a connection. Use Zoom/Meet to practice conversational English and read together.
Use our lesson plans — no need to prep!
We provide weekly materials to guide conversation, nothing for you to prepare. Stay focused on enjoying the experience and learning about each other.

Read & Rise is not just a volunteer opportunity to pad your resumé (though of course it will speak volumes about your character and values.) Read & Rise is an opportunity to connect with girls from another culture and build meaningful, lasting relationships. It's a low-commitment opportunity to share your native language, opening doors of opportunity for others while giving you a chance to learn about their culture and expand your own worldview.
